At a moment when there are more and more initiatives for slowing down tobacco consumption, the problems linked to its cultivation go on being ignored. The use of toxic agricultural products is imposed to farmers by tobacco firms. They are derived from military armament. They cause acute and chronic intoxications which induce headaches, vomiting, pulmonary problems, immune defence decreasing… In Argentina, the head of the paediatrics department in Posadas hospital, Doctor Demaio, asserts that the contact with these products induces antenatal malformations. According to him, it is just the beginning because these people whose genomists have been altered by these products also give birth to mentally deficient generations. In 1996, the suicide rate at Venancio Aires, a Brazilian town where tobacco is the first resource, was ten times bigger than the national average. Once more time, agricultural toxic products are incriminated – particularly in a study done by a multi-disciplinary team, based in Porto Alegre.
